Diversity of information

Diversity of information

Aim: to teach students about bias and open-mindedness, to help students realise how facts can be interpreted in different ways, to promote cautios approach to the information found online

1.  Find three or four newspaper articles talking about the same event  in different ways.
2. Ask your students to read the articles.
3. Ask your students questions:

  • Do the articles portray the event in the same way?
  • Do the articles give only dry facts?
  • Do the articles express the same emotions?
  • Can you guess what the authors of the individual articles wanted to achieve?
4. Discuss with your students how the same event can be presented in different ways based on the author's beliefs, preferences or political views. Emphasise the fact that you can never rely on one source of information solely.
